Desertserges National School received their Flag as part of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme
On Wednesday 24th November Lieutenant Elizabeth Barrett (from the Irish Naval Service), Petty Officer Marc Lenihan (from the Irish Naval Service) and Trooper Gary Kennedy (from The Irish Army) paid a special visit to our school as part of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme.
This Programme will see teams from Óglaigh na hÉireann, the Irish Defence Forces, visit every one of the 3200 primary school across the Republic of Ireland to deliver the National Flag and a copy of the 1916 proclamation.
This will all come together on 15th March 2016, which has been set aside by the Department of Education as a special day to focus on the 1916 Proclamation and the raising of our National Flag.
The pupils got to ask our special visitors many interesting questions and they learnt about the special badges, medals and bars that the service people were wearing. they were especially impressed with the big jeep that came into the school grounds.
