Today Garda Damien White visited our school. he talked to the pupils about cycling on the roads. The first thing he mentioned to them was about checking that the brakes work, that the light works and the saddle and the handle bars are of the correct height for you. Then he talked about wearing helmets and the yellow jackets. After that he talked about cycle safety on the road, stopping and signalling, observing all around you for dangers.
After the cycle talk he talked about car safety and the importance of a safety belt and about the height you must be to sit in the front of the car.
He them told the pupils all about his uniform
- Hat
- Jacket
- Shoulder number
- Detachable tie
- Toe capped boots
- Handcuffs
- Pepper spray
- Truncheon
Garda Damien made their day after the talk when he brought the pupils out to his garda van. He turned on the blue lights and the siren, which the pupils all loved. He even allowed them to sit in the back of the van where “people who don’t behave the best” would be kept.
