Mr Grainger talked to the pupils on the 11th November about World War 1, he gave the pupils a local view of the war and was able to show photos and books from Bandon and County Cork.
Later in the week with Mrs Sweeney in English Class, the pupils watched the Sainsbury’s Christmas advertisement for 2014 depicting the football match played between the two sides on Christmas Day during World War 1. The pupils also looked at the words of the Garth Brook song “Belleau Wood” which also talked about the Christmas Day Truce.
Oh, the snowflakes fell in silence
Over Belleau Wood that night
For a Christmas truce had been declared
By both sides of the fight
As we lay there in our trenches
The silence broke in two
By a German soldier singing
A song that we all knew
Though I did not know the language
The song was “Silent Night”
Then I heard my buddy whisper,
“All is calm and all is bright”
